What's Your "Y"

Interview with Josh Reidt, Owner of Reidt Fitness Systems in Costa Mesa

Tell us about your journey.

My career ended when I was 20 yrs old from an arm injury. After that injury my scholarship was taken away and I had no clue what I was going to do with my life since I had always been an athlete.

I never wanted another athlete to experience that feeling so I started studying and learning from doctors and Physical Therapists about how to take care of the body specifically a baseball players body. From there I started training athletes while I continued to learn, moved to Southern California and opened my own 7k sq ft facility where now I have a few hundred athletes comprised of the top MLB, college and high school players from all over the country!!

What has been your main source of motivation?

My family has always been my motivation !! I have 3 little boys (7,5 & 2) and an amazing wife who has supported me in every way possible.

Where do you find more motivation: doubters or supporters?

I have always been self-motivated so haters don’t phase me. Naturally you hear things both good and bad but its important to stay true to what you believe is best for each athlete.

What is the biggest mental challenge you've had to face in your sport and how have you conquered that?

Starting the facility was the biggest adversity I faced. Finding the right spot, building it out, dropping your savings on a dream are all very stressful things.

What do you do to make sure you and your athletes are physically and mentally prepared for competition?

Sleep and music!! Waking up feeling rested is big for me and the right playlist can help you push yourself past previous limitations during a workout.

Describe your recovery strategies. How do you know if those recovery strategies are working?

I take my workouts and recovery very seriously. If I’m going to ask my athletes to do something, I better be able to do it myself. Nobody respects the coach that doesn’t practice what he preaches.

I use YOLKED as one of my daily staples to maximize the efficiency I absorb protein which speeds up my recovery and helps me retain my lean muscle mass.

What's Your "Y"? What keeps you going and training as hard as you do?

Being a good role model for my children and my athletes is why I push myself the way I do in the gym.

Being able to relate to an athletes mental state during a workout or where he’s at in his recovery because I have also experienced his stress/fatigue is an invaluable teaching tool.

Where do you see yourself as an athlete in 5 years?

In 5 years I see myself as one of there top jiu-jitsu athletes in the world !! I have a background in Muay-Thai and need a new challenge.

I’ve always been fascinated by the mental/physical capacity needed to practice/compete in jiu-jitsu.

Favorite motivational quote.

"What we do in life echoes in eternity,” from Gladiator. This is literally tattooed in Latin on my left bicep.

“Finding safe, accessible, effective and certified products isn’t an easy task. YOLKED checks all those boxes for me!! The strength & recovery benefits are safe and beneficial to athletes of all ages making YOLKED a staple in my facility!
